How to Shutdown Linux Box Using CTRL+ALT+DEL

At default CTRL+ALT+DEL will only make Linux restarting, by modifying file inittab in /etc folder we can change this shortcut to shutting down your Linux box. This shortcut will be useful for standalone Linux box like Linux as Router or a Web Server.

Interesting? Ok, now open inittab in /etc folder using your favorite console text editor like VI or pico/nano and search for ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now. Shutdown -t3 -r now is command to force Linux doing reboot in after 3 second delay.

Now change it to ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -h now, this will cause Linux to put all harddrives on the system in standby mode just before halt or poweroff.

Let's try it now by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time and your Linux box should be shutdown immediately.
