Mikrotik Wireless - Easy Steps Create WDS, Hotspot Implementation

Wireless Distribution System is a system that enables the wireless interconnection of access points in an IEEE 802.11 network. It allows a wireless network to be expanded using multiple access points without the need for a wired backbone to link them, as is traditionally required. The notable advantage of WDS over other solutions is that it preserves the MAC addresses of client packets across links between access points.

An Access Point can be either a main, relay or remote base station. A main base station is typically connected to the wired Ethernet. A relay base station relays data between remote base stations, wireless clients or other relay stations to either a main or another relay base station. A remote base station accepts connections from wireless clients and passes them to relay or main stations. Connections between "clients" are made using MAC addresses rather than by specifying IP assignments (Wikipedia).

WDS may also be referred to as repeater mode because it appears to bridge and accept wireless clients at the same time. To create WDS we need at least 2 Access Point at different place, one as a master Access Point and the other as a relay Access Point.

Let start with connecting Winbox to Mikrotik Box you want to set as Master Access Point.

  • Navigate to Wireless Menu and Select Interfaces.
  • Click on Wireless Interface you want to set as master interface, on Wireless Tab set Wireless Mode to ap bridge and set your SSID. On WDS tab set WDS Mode to static.
  • Add new interface by click on "+" buton and select WDS. On general tab name it with whatever you want i.e Master AP, On WDS tab select Master interface you've set before and Fill MAC with MAC Address of relay Wireless Interface.
  • Now in the main left menu click on Brigde. Ad new Bridge by click on "+" on Bridge tab, and give it a name. On Ports tab click "+" to add interface, select Master Interface and then Your New WDS interface.
Your Master Access point is finish now, and then connect your Winbox to Mikrotik Box you want to set up as Relay Access Point.

  • Navigate to Wireless Menu and select interface.
  • Click on Wireless Interface you want to set as master interface, on Wireless Tab set Wireless Mode to ap bridge and set SSID same as Master Access Point. On WDS tab set WDS Mode to static.
  • Add new interface by click on "+" buton and select WDS. On general tab name it with whatever you want i.e Relay AP, On WDS tab select Master interface you've set before and Fill MAC with MAC Address of Master Wireless Interface.
  • In the main left menu click on Brigde. Ad new Bridge by click on "+" on Bridge tab, and give it a name. On Ports tab click "+" to add interface, select Relay Interface and then Your New WDS interface.

Note:
  • Channel must be the same between Master AP and Relay AP.
  • If want to add another WDS near to Relay AP then First Relay can be act as a Master AP of second Relay AP.
  • Signal are the important for communication between Master AP and Relay AP, so place Relay AP on where it can get a good signal strength of Master AP.
